Obamacare- Annual Open Enrollment ended 11/1, BUT…..
The annual Open Enrollment period started on November 1st and ran through January 15th, 2023. BUT, there are exceptions that may allow you to apply via a Special Enrollment Period. (SEP). For example, if your income is 150% or lower than the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), you may enroll at anytime during the year! Also, if you lost coverage because you lost your job, you would have 60 days to apply for Obamacare. See below for more exceptions!
To see if you qualify, please feel free to call us for a free consultation at (910) 775-0700.
- In general, a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) may be available for other reasons, such as:
- Loss of qualifying health coverage
- Change in household size
- Change in primary place of living that results in access to new qualified health plans
- Change in household size
- Change in eligibility for Marketplace coverage or help paying for coverage
In most cases, consumers have 60 days from the date of the qualifying event to enroll in coverage. If the consumer is enrolling in Marketplace coverage for the first time, he or she may need to submit documents to prove SEP eligibility. Consumers who are members of a federally recognized Indian tribe or Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act Corporation shareholders can sign up for or change plans once per month throughout the year.
* An example for a single person with a FPL between 100% -150% would be $14,580 to $21,870.
NOTE: Marketplace enrollees who experience a change in household income throughout the year should report this change to the Marketplace as soon as possible, as it may affect the amount of financial assistance for which they may be eligible.
The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is set up and administered through the Federal Marketplace and the insurance portion is implemented by insurance companies such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield. There may be several insurance companies that operate in each state. There are no health questions and pre-existing conditions are covered from day one!
Your particular health PLAN and PREMIUM will vary by the following factors:
- Zip code where you live
- Age
- Marital Status
- Number of Dependents on your tax return
- Projected Modified Adjusted Gross household income for the plan year**
Here are some quick sample scenarios:
- 30 yr old, $19,000 annual income, single, no dependents, living in Wilmington NC. They would qualify for a $0 premium plan with a $0 deductible with an annual maximum out-of-pocket expense (MOOP) of $700.
- That same person with a $25,000 income would qualify for a $0 premium plan with a $750 deductible and an annual MOOP of $2,850.
- Increase his/her income to $30,000 and they would qualify for a $47 premium plan with a $2,500 deductible and an annual MOOP of $8,550.
- Furthermore, if you were to change the income, add dependents or change the area, the premiums and the plans will vary greatly.

Kind words from my health insurance clients…
Sal is hands-down the BEST insurance agent around!! Insurance jargon and policies can get really convoluted and confusing, but Sal makes it easy!
He walked both my partner and I through the application process, helped to get us the lowest price possible, and has been a great help and a great resource ever since! He even offered to speak to the insurance company on my behalf, which saved me a lot of time and confusion.
He also went above and beyond to share other resources with us, as we’re new to the city of Wilmington. Sal is friendly, professional, and courteous. He will make sure you are well taken care of! You rock, Sal!

Sal really cares and takes the time to listen to what I need and can afford. Based on his 40 years in the business, he offered his honest recommendation for an Obamacare plan that was right for me.
What I liked best was that he gave the pro’s and the con’s of the different plans and let me decide which plan I felt most comfortable with.
I don’t have to worry about calling an 800# and waiting on hold as he encourages me to call him directly- any day of the week!
I’ve felt very confident recommending him to several of my friends and they have been very satisfied as well!
